My name is David Titmarsh and I am a fully qualified Registered Nurse, and have been working for the NHS for 15 plus years. I have also the honour of being a Queens Nurse, achieved a few years ago. I developed an interest in acupuncture to help with medical conditions a few years ago, and undertook a course in the basic principles of medical acupuncture. I have studied to achieve the 'Certificate in Medical Acupuncture' and am a member of the 'British Medical Acupuncture Society' (BMAS) www.medical-acupuncture.co.uk Dignity and Respect are key words when dealing with any client, and if you wish someone else in the room with you during your treatments that is perfectly fine. I have full Professional and Public Liability Insurance. I work fulltime, and that is why I am mainly available evenings and weekends only. Payment is payable strictly on the day of treatment. I live in Ramsey, so prices may vary depending on your location.
|Acupuncture stems from the Ancient Chinese about 2000 years ago. It was used in a very basic form to relieve symptoms, cure disease and promote health. The western approach to acupuncture can be traced back to the 1970s, but there have been information about it, coming through from China since the 1600s. In the UK, one of the main approaches which I follow, is based on acupuncture being used as a therapy following an orthodox clinical diagnosis. Points are then chosen based on neurophysiological (the bodies natural nervous system) principles. This means that when I first meet my client I will ask several questions to identify what medical condition or ailment is being treated. If I feel that further medical tests are required, then I will refer you back to your GP or consultant, to have this done prior to any acupuncture taking place. This is to ensure you are getting the best available medical attention, pertaining to your condition and also for me to ensure that I have all the available information about your condition to hand in advance of any treatments being offered. This is why the intial session will last a bit longer approximately 45-60 minutes. Subsequent sessions should last on average 30-45 minutes, as for maximum benefit the needles should stay in place for about 20-30 minutes. You will only need to undress the area of the body being treated. From experience, to help deal with many conditions ie lower back pain, an average of 6 sessions are needed about 1-2 weeks apart, to help see any real benefit.
Q- Will it hurt? A- People generally describe a feeling like a pin prick when the needle penetrates the skin, but then the feeling disappears. Obviously the more relaxed the person is, the lesser the sensation.
Q- How long are the needles? A- The needles vary depending on which part of the body is being used, ie hands and feet have a much smaller needle (15mm) than more muscley areas, such as the thighs or buttocks (30-45mm).
Q- How safe is Acupuncture? A- Firstly, I will say that all my acupuncture needles are completely sterile, and are used for one use only, and then safely discarded after each use. The safety of acupuncture is on the whole, much greater than say taking medication for a condition. The small amount of risk attached to acupuncture, includes bruising, especially for people with a bleeding disorder, fainting, sweating, pneumothorax (only if going near the lung area, and there are techniques used to prevent this from happening), and some skin infections can still occur in a small number of cases.
Q- I might be pregnant, can I still have acupuncture? A- There is very little evidence to suggest that acupuncture is a hazard to pregnant women. However, I will consider each case that comes before me individually, and I will discuss with the client the risk/ benefit of proceeding with any treatment, especially in the first trimester, when the overall risk of pregnancy problems developing are greater.
Q- Do you treat children? A- I have little experience of working with children, and the parents do need to consent along with the child to any treatment. Once again, I will consider each case on its own merits.
